massive blood in stool in elderly patients

Two major causes are: 

1. Diverticular bleeding: 

It occurs due to the eroding of a small artery of the colon. Bleeding is often self-limited but it can recur.

2. Angiodysplasia

Risk factors include aortic stenosis, End-stage renal disease, and von Willebrand disease.
